Secret Daughter

Two Story lines, one in India and one in California. A young mother in India gives birth to a girl.  They are poor and can not afford multiple children.  Her husband wants a boy to help him on their farm and she knows that he will take her baby away and have her killed.  She informs her husband that the baby has died and then sneaks off to the city and an orphanage where she drops the baby off and prays that she has a better life.

A couple in California has had multiple miscarriages and she is told she will not be able to have children.  Nothing they do will change this fact.  With her husband, a man who left India to go to med school in the United States and ended up staying when he married an America, it almost seems natural that they adopt a baby from India.

The author does a good job of intertwining the stories and people together.  It is a very poignant story one worth putting on your reading list.
